OperatingSenior Fullstack Engineer (React, TypeScript, Node.js)

The software consultancies use to run their business is either too complex to live with or too shallow to trust — we're building Operating (https://www.operating.app) to be both deep and pleasant, the kind of system that lets a 300-person consultancy run on a 3-person back office. It handles staffing, allocations, billing, and financial planning: everything between a deal landing and the invoice getting paid. Many of our customers come to us from other tools, having outgrown the simple ones or given up fighting the complex ones. Consultancies are running their businesses on Operating today, but the product is still very much in build mode. One of our founders just moved to the US to lead our US expansion, and the next year is about scaling the rest of the company while we keep building.

We're hiring a senior fullstack engineer to help build it.

The role

You'd work on product features end to end: sitting with customers, working with product and design, shipping the code, watching what happens. Over time, you'd take ownership of a domain (allocations, the financial model, billing, integrations) and make it yours. You'd be the fifth engineer. The CTO still writes code. Decisions get made in the room you're in, by the people doing the work.

You'd also help shape how we build: reviewing PRs, mentoring as we grow, and influencing the architecture and engineering standards as the product gets bigger.

Some of what you might ship in your first six months:

• An AI-driven workflow that takes a signed deal in our CRM and produces a staffed, scheduled project plan
• An integration layer that pulls data from a dozen accounting systems without melting
• A month-end close workflow that turns the finance controller's worst week of the month into a clean afternoon
• A revamped reporting and dashboard experience — the place a COO can actually answer "is the business healthy?" in one screen

This works if you can do senior-level work, whether you've held the title before or this would be your first time. You're comfortable owning the whole problem rather than a slice of it, and ambiguity should be okay with you. A lot of the job is figuring out the right answer when nobody knows it yet. We also want someone who pushes back when something feels wrong.

This probably won't be a fit if you want a tight spec, a finished and polished product to work in, or a 50-person engineering org around you. We don't have any of those. Or if you're not interested in learning how consultancies operate.

Our tech

The backend is a TypeScript modular monolith running on AWS, with Postgres as the source of truth. The frontend is React with tRPC, Tailwind, and shadcn — types flow end to end. The product integrates with the tools our customers already live in (CRMs, HRIS, accounting), and exposes a REST API alongside an MCP server for AI clients.

Test coverage is strong but pragmatic — we test what earns its keep, not for a 100% number. AI tools are available to every engineer, and everyone uses them day to day. We deploy continuously, and every PR gets reviewed before it lands.

You are expected to have:

• At least 3 years of fullstack experience (consulting or SaaS application development strongly preferred)
• Strong experience with React, TypeScript, and Node.js
• Ability to independently drive features from idea to production
• Strong analytical and conceptual thinking combined with an ambitious, proactive mindset
• A full working proficiency in English for day-to-day collaboration (Finnish skills are a plus)

Bonus points if you have experience with:

• Multi-tenant SaaS architectures
• Billing, finance, resource planning, or workflow automation software
• Working in a startup or scale-up environment where roles and priorities evolve
• AI, data engineering, integrations, DevOps, or platform engineering (AWS, CI/CD)

Practicalities:
This is a full-time and permanent position with a preferred start date as soon as possible, and you will be employed directly by Operating Solutions Oy. The role is based in Maria01 in Helsinki with a primary focus on working from the office while allowing flexibility for remote work when it makes sense. Salary in this position is approximately 5500-6500 €/month depending on your experience.
