Ecolane is a fast-growing leader in web-based transit scheduling and dispatch software. The ultimate goal is to make passengers life easier by enabling smooth transportation. In the heart of Ecolane’s solution is the demand response management (DRT) platform, which provides automated real-time scheduling and dispatching. Ecolane DRT solution is used for example by transit agencies to increase productivity and maximize scheduling efficiency while improving the rider experience at the same time.  It is an excellent time to join Ecolane, as transit industry is going through radical shifts both in the public and private sectors. Ecolane was founded in Finland, and the research and product development team is located in Espoo. The North American headquarters is located close to Philadelphia. Ecolane is looking for a Java Developer to join its  R&D team in Espoo. In this role you will focus on developing Ecolane’s core Java product, which is the core of the company’s product line and communicates with other modules, such as mobile applications, reporting and billing modules. Your daily tasks consist of implementing new features to the core product, writing specifications for the features, in addition to fixing bugs. More specifically, your tasks might relate for example to solving  how the business logic for scheduling works, how to access databases efficiently, how to develop APIs to other modules. 

Ecolane is looking for a logical thinker,  who not only writes clean code but also considers how the code works as a part of a bigger entity.  You have good skills in Java and you are ready to start coding with it since the day one. You might be still completing your studies and/or gained already some years of relevant software development experience. You will succeed in this position if you are interested in solving challenging problems, actively ask for help if needed and collaborate with your colleagues to solve problems and suggest development ideas. You will supported by a R&D team of 20 experts, consisting of developers, testers, product managers, and system administrators.  In the team each person takes both pride in and responsibility for the work and results.

What’s the Ecolane’s solution about?

Ecolane’s solution is based on Java core, Ruby on Rails modules and user interfaces, and Android and iOS applications. Other main technologies are REST APIs and MySQL databases.

The solution collects passenger eligibility and funding information. It allows for the entry of trip requests from passengers. The solution automatically creates schedules for efficient routing on transit vehicles, dispatches the schedules through advanced mobile data terminals, and collects and communicates performance data. It provides reports for local, state and national stakeholders on every aspect of the service from on-time performance to driver performance to billing information.

To succeed in this role, we hope that you have:

  • Good skills in Java and and understanding of object-oriented programming in general
  • Basic understanding of the fundamental design principles behind a scalable and well-maintainable application 
  • Solid skills in databases and queries
  • Good communication skills in English

We don’t require but consider as an asset:

  • Previous work experience in software development
  • Basic understanding of Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
